About the Work

Lewis brings the two figures in Mother and Child close enough that their profiles and shoulders overlap. Their proximity conveys a bond, while the distinct turn of each face keeps the relationship from becoming a posed emblem. Controlled drawing and restrained color keep attention on the figures and the space between them.

Exhibition context

Mother and Child was included in The Work Is Never Finished: Prints, Drawings, and Paintings by Samella Lewis, a 2026 survey at Louis Stern Fine Arts. The exhibition placed this 2007 lithograph within the broader arc of Lewis’s work on paper.

Print and edition notes

The estate impression belongs to an edition of 40. Lithography preserves the tonal variation of Lewis’s drawing while giving the paired figures a compact silhouette.
