About the Work

Creole Mules draws on a memory from Samella Lewis’s Louisiana childhood. Rather than render the scene in naturalistic color, Lewis transforms the animals and landscape through saturated purple, orange, yellow, green, and black. The mules gather into a dense procession across the center of the image, held between a high horizon and the broken marks below.

Flat layers of screenprinted color give the scene its structure. Shifts between those layers separate and recombine the animals, so the procession reads clearly while the landscape remains unstable and active.

Institutional context

An impression of Creole Mules is held in the Prints and Drawings collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, where it is catalogued as a 1995 screenprint.

Print and edition notes

The image was issued in an edition of 60. Screenprinting allowed Lewis to build the composition through distinct layers of saturated color while preserving the sharp energy of her drawing.
