About the Work
The square composition of Black Sun is anchored by a dark circular form, while sharp planes, curved bands, and radiating cuts pull the image outward and back toward its center. It suggests a celestial body without becoming a literal landscape.
Lewis uses the language of the linocut—solid black shapes, exposed paper, and the physical rhythm of carved marks—to make contrast carry the work. Dense passages press against open areas, while repeated arcs and diagonals keep the eye moving across the image.
Print history and edition
First created in 1970, Black Sun was reprinted in 2001 in an edition of 10. The long interval between its creation and reprinting gives this impression a place in both the work’s early history and its later return to print.
