About the Work
Migrants is a subject Lewis returned to across decades. In this composition, benches, walls, and sharply cut lines press several figures into an interior-like space. Rather than show a dramatic departure or arrival, Lewis focuses on the pause: people waiting and listening together.
No single figure dominates. Faces, hands, and bodies form a network across the image, making migration register as a shared social experience rather than an individual story.
Institutional and print history
Earlier impressions dated 1967–68 are held by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Museum of Modern Art; both identify Lewis as artist, printer, and publisher. The estate impression is a later edition of the composition, dated 1949/2006.
About this edition
This 2006 linocut is from an edition of 60. It returns to an earlier image in a smaller format than the 1960s impressions held by the two New York museums.
