About the Work
Gertrude is a closely observed portrait of a young sitter holding a flower. Lewis keeps the setting spare, drawing attention to the sitter’s face, upright posture, and hands.
The flower gives the image a single point of color and leads the eye back to the sitter. Fine lithographic drawing keeps the encounter direct without overworking the background.
Technique and production
Gertrude was produced as a hand-drawn lithograph in 2004. Documented impressions were printed on archival Rives BFK paper at J. K. Fine Art Editions, with hand-colored accents used in selected passages.
Edition context
The estate catalogues this impression within an edition of 50. The narrow vertical sheet reinforces the sitter’s upright presence and gives the portrait an intimate scale.
